Make a beautiful book for yourself or someone else. The first session involves painting paper with ink and wash that will become pages for the book. This will be loose, free form painting that is easy but effective. During the second session, people will use decorative paper on book board to make covers, as well as cut the painted paper, made the previous week, into pages. The final session will offer the chance to learn a multi needle Coptic binding process for the book that creates a lovely braided binding on an exposed-spine.
Although the final book will not be blank with its painted pages, those pages will still be appropriate for some hand written text.
Sharon Kenney Biddle has been teaching bookbinding for fifteen years. She believes that old-fashioned paper-filled books, especially ones that we make ourselves, are not obsolete or irrelevant. Designing a book and building its contents are worthy, satisfying experiences. A book that is entirely one's own from cover to cover is a splendid example of imagination and careful craftsmanship.
