This fall, why not make a beautiful book for yourself or for someone else? The first session you will paint paper with ink and a delicate acrylic wash. This will be loose, free form painting that is easy but effective. During the second session, you will use decorative paper on book board to make covers, as well as cut the painted paper, made the previous week, into pages. The final session will offer you the chance to learn a multi needle Coptic binding process for the book that creates a lovely braided binding on an exposed-spine. Although the final book will not be blank with its painted pages, those pages will still be appropriate for hand written text or adding words with collage if you choose. This class is appropriate for high school students and adults.
Sharon Kenney Biddle has been teaching bookbinding for twenty years. She believes that books, especially the ones we make ourselves, are not obsolete or irrelevant. Designing a book and building its contents are worthy, satisfying experiences. A book that is entirely one's own from cover to cover is a touchable, useable example of imagination and careful craftsmanship.
