“Just living is not enough...one has to have sunshine, freedom, and a little flower.”
This quote is from Hans Christian Anderson, and it’s a great summary of what makes receiving - and giving - flowers as a gift so special. For thousands of years, flowers have been used to commemorate special events and celebrations, and it could be said the love of flowers is in our cultural and genetic DNA.
Dawn Berg, owner of Cherry Blossom Floral Design, knows all about how flowers are part of our everyday lives. She’s been the owner of Cherry Blossom Floral Design, located at 240 Union Street in Littleton, for over 10 years now and understands exactly what kind of statement can be made with flowers.
Dawn originally hails from St. Augustine, Florida, and her journey as a business owner has taken her down an adventurous past. She and her family moved to the North Country in 2003, where they bought the East Gate Motor Inn in Littleton right away. Dawn grew up in the floral industry for the better part of her life, so when the opportunity to buy Cherry Blossom Floral Design, she jumped on the opportunity.
“It had always been a dream of mine,” Dawn says, “and it just felt like the right thing to do."
As anyone who’s ever owned a business can tell you, it’s never an altogether easy process. In her second year of owning her floral shop, Dawn opened up a satellite location in North Woodstock, and realizes now with hindsight that she wasn’t ready at the time for that. “It wasn’t the right time for me personally, as I had two small children, and I feel if we had waited and put more energy into what we had to begin with, it would have been a success….who’s to say?”
Over the course of 10 years, it’s clear that Cherry Blossom Floral Design has become known in the area for their exceptional quality and kind, courteous service throughout the North Country.
Dawn loves the product she works with and loves that she can be creative, while making people happy with a token of someone’s love or appreciation. She’s so grateful for all of her customers, who come in all sorts of flavors, from the walk-in customers who stop in every other week for a single rose to the regular customers who come in every 6 months for a major holiday. One of the more unconventional pieces of her business is the “Blossom Bouquet of the Month Club” where a person can sign up for regular, monthly deliveries of varying levels of bouquets. It’s a great service that allows people to “set it and forget it” and is a fantastic option for romantics and business owners alike. It’s actually one of her more popular items during the Valentine’s Day rush - what’s better than flowers once a year? Flowers EVERY month for a year.
Dawn has even developed a relationship with the Littleton Coin Company, where someone who works there has the chance to win a small arrangement every Monday. It’s a great working relationship, in that someone is always guaranteed a smile on Monday, and it provides fantastic exposure for her business. It’s those types of relationships in the North Country that help our business community thrive.
As a business that caters to in-store customers, as well as those they deliver to, there have been some really unique customer situations over the last 10 years. In her early years, Dawn remembers accidentally driving down a snowmobile trail in Twin Mountain. When she first was getting started, she remembers losing a pair of trimming shears, and having them delivered two weeks later as she accidentally wrapped them up in a bouquet! Offering flowers to the North Country also comes with having to handle every single emotion people can have, from love, to happiness, to sadness and grief. One situation Dawn remembers clearly is that a woman once ordered flowers online for herself from her recently deceased boyfriend. Flowers are unique for every aspect of human sentimentality. And Dawn has a fantastic staff to help her through every part of running this business; employee Lisa Knapp has been with her for 9 years in May and it’s apparent that Lisa loves this work as much as Dawn.
“This is the third year in a row that Dawn has helped my daughter and her team with flower arrangements for Elizabeth Johnson Group Retreats. We could not ask for a more supportive collaborator. Dawn helps us order just the right type of seasonal flowers for making our own arrangements, and she also creates stunning floral works in personal vases I provide. The floral designs are creative, unique, and long-lasting. I am still enjoying flowers that Dawn arranged two weeks ago! Cherry Blossom Floral Design will certainly meet all your flower arrangement needs and much more. I enjoy working with Dawn and her staff. They always greet you with caring words and a smile.”
That’s just one of the fantastic reviews you’ll find on Cherry Blossom Floral Design’s Facebook page, and if you’ve never worked with them, you’ll discover how happy you’ll be with their stupendous service. Upcoming news to be excited about: Dawn is really looking forward to expanding their wedding services and delivery capabilities throughout the North Country. And exciting opportunities have opened for them since having their work published in La Belle Wedding Magazine. They’re expanding their footprint throughout New England for wedding services, with weddings this upcoming year in Montgomery, VT, and Jackson and Pittsburgh, NH, just to name a few.
