North Country Snapshot #39 Phil Aldridge

Name: Phil Aldridge
Occupation: Baker
Residence: St. Johnsbury, VT
Age: 28

1) Given the choice of anyone in the world, living or dead, real or fictional, with whom would you want to have dinner?

“So I sat with my original answer to this question for a long time. It threw me for a bit of a loop. If I could have dinner with anyone in living or dead etc. it would be my father. My father is very much alive and I see him more than most people probably see their parents so, it seems like an odd answer. I enjoy my father’s company and with all of life’s distractions it’s very rare that I get to sit down with just my father and share even a moment.”

2) What’s one of your favorite movies?

“I skipped this question and came back to it after finishing the rest… I still can’t think of a good answer… Casino… That one steady cam shot that’s five minutes long of them walking through the back entrance and through the kitchen and all that is technically amazing…”

3) Cat or dog?

“I like both. If I had to pick a side I’d most likely go with dog. More practical. Home defense cat just doesn’t evoke the same spine tingling fear… unless you’re talking about a really big cat, but then there are serious ethical questions about keeping a tiger (etc) as a pet.”

4) If you could vacation anywhere in the world, where would you go?

“South East Asia. Good food.”

5) What’s the last thing you remember hearing on the radio?

“I was listening to NPR this morning. Radio was on in the car earlier but I wasn’t listening to it at all.”

6) What’s your favorite thing about the North Country?

“It’s just different. I mean, everywhere is different but being up here is in a lot of ways its own world. I give thought from time to time of moving away from here but then, I remember, I’m established here. Which is a very easy thing to do here. Small towns… mixed blessings at best, but for whatever it’s worth after 15 years of coming and going from this area I finally think I’ve settled on staying.”

7) Smartphone, flip phone, or rotary phone?

“I have a Samsung Galaxy 5. My contract ends in a couple of months then I’m downgrading to one of those phones designed for military and 3rd world use. You know water/sledgehammer proof with a battery life of up to 3 weeks. (Flip phone) Though a mobile rotary phone is a neat idea. No matter how impractical.”

8) What’s your least favorite thing about the North Country?

“It’s pretty much the same as my favorite thing. Small towns everybody knows everybody.”

9) What's the biggest problem facing the world right now?

“Idiots. Never under estimate the power of stupid people in large groups. Most people aren’t even smart enough to work in their own self interest. p.s. Vote for Bernie”

10) How do you like your steak cooked?

“Complaining. Kidding! Med rare is a good standard. Enough Millard to create that amazing glutamate umami taste but it’s far from becoming shoe leather. This is the most cooked anyone should eat a good steak. If you want well done don’t order a steak. You ruin a good piece of meat. Shoulder chuck and filet taste almost the same at that point. Actually the shoulder would probably be better because it has a higher fat content than the Filet would.”

11) What’s something most people don’t know about you?

“I’m highly opinionated… oh wait no anyone who is reading this knows that’s not true. I don’t hide much, if anything. If anything I’m prone towards over sharing.”

9) What's the biggest problem facing the world right now?

“That's a great question. There are lots of problems in this world but right now we need to focus on what's wrong with America. The establishment has taken over, our own people are starving, our Vets are homeless and not cared for. We are required to pay for healthcare that we (as working class citizens) cannot afford. We owe TRILLIONS of debt and China basically owns us at the point. Do you know that we no longer own our National Park Systems, China does. We import goods but do not export accordingly. Our jobs are being being moved to other countries at lightning speed and there is nothing that this administration wants to do about it. When is the last time you called customer service for anything and you actually spoke with someone from the United States? No often I'll bet. Social Security is bankrupt and by the time I go to retire, there will be absolutely nothing left for us. Do not get me started on illegals either. I was denied Medicaid because I make $11 too much a month... yes $11. Meanwhile, illegals are living it up at my expense. America needs a change and we need it quick. Repeal Obamacare, build a wall, bring back our jobs, support our Veterans. It's not simple but it can be done. American is a business and we need a businessman to run it. $15/hr minimum wage is not going to solve any of these problems! ‪#‎Trump2016‬

Death Cults have to be treated as such de-programming, re-education, etc...There are more than enough resources on this Planet for all of Humanity. If we could all get past our ego driven perception, start giving, we could transform into the next dimension: the age of Spirituality….then we start fixing the sh*t that’s wrong: greed etc….and things will start moving at a pretty rapid clip….so again...lack of unity and our perceptions.”

1) Given the choice of anyone in the world, living or dead, real or fictional, with whom would you want to have dinner?

“If I could have dinner with anyone past or present, I would have dinner with my Grampa. He passed away when I was 4 and was my hero and an Eagle Scout like my Dad.. I would love another chance to hear all of his stories, memories, wisdoms... now that I am old enough to appreciate them.”

2) What’s one of your favorite movies?

“Favorite movie is way too hard! Dick Prenneke: Alone in the Wilderness.. Labyrinth? Legend? What Dreams May Come? Goonies? I could go on forever, Henson, Spielberg, Burton....so much good!!!”

3) Cat or dog?

“CAT! A million times over, cat! I love all animals but with our lives being so busy and up in the air, our cats just suit or family best. They have such awesome personalities. Low key, chill, good listeners... A purring cat gives off one of the most positive, balancing, energy recharge... The longer the better. Awesome for anxiety. Cats are unfortunately not great hikers or road trip/photo shoot buddies.”

4) If you could vacation anywhere in the world, where would you go?

“If I could go anywhere on vacation, I would go to Thailand (for my 3rd visit) to bring my daughter to learn about the culture and meet our family. If I had to choose otherwise... someplace random like Greece, Portugal... New Zealand??”

5) What’s the last thing you remember hearing on the radio?

“Last song I heard on the radio... Don't remember, however this morning I was singing "Jenny" (867-5309) as some sort of an inside joke with myself.. Then throughout my day I heard the song on several different radios stations , in different places. I am all about Synchronicity.”

6) What’s your favorite thing about the North Country?

“The history. The rustic Americana and sense of community amidst the seasons, the nature, flora and fauna, scenery and landscape.. Breathtaking.”

7) Smartphone, flip phone, or rotary phone?

“Alas, I chose Smartphone. Mostly for all the things a Smartphone can do besides be an actually phone to talk on. Ashamed.”

8) What’s your least favorite thing about the North Country?

“Least favorite thing about the North Country...the close minded, prejudiced, bigoted, ignorant refusal to respect all humans (or one's self).”

9) What's the biggest problem facing the world right now?

“I believe the biggest problem facing the World today is GREED. Ultimately, there are many problems... But most could be fixed it weren't for greed.”

10) How do you like your steak cooked?

“I like my steak medium/rare... with garlic, mushrooms and bleu cheese.”

11) What’s something most people don’t know about you?

“In 1990 (lol!!) I was in 5th grade and my poster and essay about what being an American meant to me, won 1st place in the state of VT and was on display in the Smithsonian, where it now resides in some storage warehouse with all the other outdated displays that come alive at night.”

1) Given the choice of anyone in the world, living or dead, real or fictional, with whom would you want to have dinner?

“I would have dinner with my parents. I miss them every day. I wish that I had taken the time to just sit and talk more when they were here. It is true that you don't know what you've got til it’s gone.”

2) What’s one of your favorite movies?

“I love old romantic comedies. Yours, Mine and Ours with Lucille Ball was always a favorite. It was a time of greater morals and a big family. Family isn't always easy, but it's always worth it.”

4) If you could vacation anywhere in the world, where would you go?

“I love warm vacations. We always have fun when we take the kids to Florida but for a couples vacation, I would love to go back to Aruba one day. I was able to go for a business trip many years ago but I wasn't able to take my husband with me. Casinos at night and sun and sand during the day is about perfect.”

5) What’s the last thing you remember hearing on the radio?
“The last thing I remember hearing on the radio was "Smoke on the Water" by Deep Purple. Classic Rock always makes me smile.”

6) What’s your favorite thing about the North Country?

“My favorite thing about the North Country is that you can live your life without neighbors prying but when you are in need, they are there for you. For the past five years, since he was 15, my son has been fighting brain cancer. The support that we have received from the community is amazing. Lyndon Institute, the faculty, staff and the alumni have been amazing. Family, friends, neighbors, and businesses and have done so much for us. We are humbled by the out-pouring of support that we have received. Recently we learned of a local charity called Jazzy's Children's Fund that helps families struggling with medical expenses due to childhood accidents and illnesses. The charity was started by the friends and family of a young girl named Jazzy who, even as she battled with cancer herself, wanted to reach out and help other struggling families. Jazzy lost her battle with cancer but her charity lives on to make her wish come true. That is the spirit
of the North Country at is best.”

7) Smartphone, flip phone, or rotary phone?

“My phone is only a little smart but it is already smarter than I, so anything smarter would be a waste.”

8) What’s your least favorite thing about the North Country?

“Every year, I dislike the snow and cold a little more. But I can't imagine the holidays without it. A little snow in November and December would be great...then it can be spring again and I'd be ok with that.”

9) What's the biggest problem facing the world right now?

“The biggest problem facing the world today is the partisan nature of politics. There is no middle ground on which to make gains. Even when two sides agree, they seem to try their hardest to find an area of disagreement that will stand in the way of accomplishing anything. Until we can learn to listen to each other and respect opposing views again, we are doomed to continue to fail as a nation.”

10) How do you like your steak cooked?

“My husband is a really good cook. (thank goodness one of us is) He quite often grills steaks over charcoal with wood chips. I enjoy mine medium well. You can cut them with a spoon. And he makes an awesome whisky sauce to top them with. Yum!”

11) What’s something most people don’t know about you?

“I am kind of an open book so there aren't many things that people who know me don't know about me. One thing that is unique about me is that I live in the house that I grew up in. My parents bought the house the year before I was born. When I was little, they were talking about selling it. I was got very upset and my mother asked me what I was going to do when I grew up and got married? I told her that I would buy the house from her then and I would raise my family in it. And that is what I did.”
