5) What’s the last thing you remember hearing on the radio?

(Folks might be familiar with his large scale hand carved bench outside of Northern Lights Music in Littleton.) If you haven’t checked out his work yet, be sure to stop by the Gallery in August. He’ll also be giving a demonstration of wood carving during the Bethlehem ArtWalk on Saturday, August 15th from 1-3. 6) What’s your favorite thing about the North Country?

“The exquisitely beautiful combination of place and people. The landscape up here is rough and rugged. So are the people. I think it’s why a lot of artists are drawn to the area, and why this area has given rise to so many artists. It takes a perseverance and steadfastness to survive up here, a willingness to keep going that simultaneously hardens folks, and renders them super tuned in to and appreciate of the wonder and beauty of everyday life.”

7) Smartphone, flip phone, or rotary phone?

“Smart phone. Though I miss the Star Trek-like fun of my old flip phone! Beam me up!”

8) What’s your least favorite thing about the North Country?

“Long cold winters with no end in sight. Sigh.”

9) What's the biggest problem facing the world right now?

“You mean, aside from disastrous climate change, which is getting mroe and more real every day in ways we won’t be able to ignore in a few years? I think our biggest problem is this dangerous and false belief that we are not utterly and intimately connected to and dependent on every other living thing on this planet, and the hideous violence that arises and plays out when we perceive ourselves as somehow separate. If we can’t snap out of that one, on both the micro and macro level, we don’t stand a chance.”

10) How do you like your steak cooked?

*unanswered*

11) What’s something most people don’t know about you?

“No one believes me when I say this, because most of the hats I wear require me to tap into my extrovert side, but I’m actually very shy.”

North Country Snapshot #10 Traci-Lee White

Name: Traci-Lee White

Occupation: Mom/student
Residence: Whitefield, NH

Age: 32

1) Given the choice of anyone in the world, living or dead, real or fictional, with whom would you want to have dinner?

"My uncle who passed away 7 years ago. I never got to say goodbye and I truly need him right about now."

2) What’s one of your favorite movies?

"Honestly, there are so many right now it is hard to choose just one. I guess I would have to say, Patch Adams with Robin Williams."

3) Cat or dog?

"This is a tricky one, my favorite animal is the cat family, white tiger however as a pet I think I prefer dogs, I have an 8 yr old female pit, she is my big baby."

4) If you could vacation anywhere in the world, where would you go?

"Venice, Italy. I have done so many reports on it that I would love to go and visit it firsthand."

5) What’s the last thing you remember hearing on the radio?

"OMG Lol it has been so long since I have listened to the radio… Well the other day I went into the store and heard the same song playing on the radio that we had just been listening to in the car on our cd. I remember thinking wow what a coincidence because where we had left of in the car we walk in the store and that is the part of the song it was at on the radio. I believe it was Journey, Don’t stop believing."

6) What’s your favorite thing about North Country?

"The mountains and the foliage. That and where I live now is nothing like it was for me in the city. We are a very tight knit community. It is like one big family, yes we have the drama and fights (like all families do), but everyone jumps to help one another. It truly is a great feeling knowing that I finally belong."

7) Smart phone, flip phone, or rotary phone?

"I have a smart phone, but I tell ya there is still nothing like the feeling you get when you slam the receiver down hanging up angrily on someone lol."

8) What’s your least favorite thing about the North Country?

"Lol get ready I am about to contradict my previous statement… Nosey neighbors… LOL not really, I think honestly though it’s the school systems. There are not enough resources in the schools up here for the mentally handicapped. Back in my old school in CT we had something called transitional classes in the school itself, all the way through high school even that was for kids with learning disabilities that needed smaller groups and hands on learning like myself. Then there was the life program for the mentally disabled like down syndrome or asperger’s and that sort of thing. Up here they have it for kids in grade and middle school where I live but nothing for the high school. And for those with Autism and Asperger’s they have a school for boys up here but the one for girls is all the way down in Manchester. The only school around here that comes slightly close to being ok is Profile in Bethlehem, NH."

9) What's the biggest problem facing the world right now?

"I feel the biggest problem facing the world right now is the economy. We are spending money on wars that are not needed instead of putting money where it can be put to better usage. We could be spending that money on health care and school programs and tuitions rather than new weapons. Certain towns cry poverty stating they have no money for funding to help those in need or to fix the roads, cutting programs in school that are needed because they don’t have the funding yet every other month we are seeing newer police vehicles because they had the funding to upgrade to the “nicer looking vehicle”? How is that fair? The government uses our funding for their vacations and to make sure they are well off yet they don’t have the funding to help our homeless. Our government funding is getting cut. They are lowering the wage you need to make in order for it to be too much in order to be qualified for state funding. And the stats they do go by is what you take in but they never consider what you pay out for bills each month so by the time all is said and done you are skipping out on a major bill (electric) or dipping into the rent fund just so you can feed your family. I just find it all a bit ridiculous and I feel they can do much better rather than cutting those that are truly in need of help off. And to top it off they are sending all sorts of food and money to the overseas families and children, so many charities to raise money for them and all of those commercials asking people to adopt a child in need, so many celebrities and families go across seas to adopt a child and bring them home. I am sorry, but what about the needy families and homeless families and the orphans that need a family over here in OUR OWN country? I feel it is more important to support our own needy families, homeless families and adopt the children in our own country. I feel we should make sure OUR country is taken care of before going off and supporting others."

10) How do you like your steak cooked?

"Run it through a warm room lol. Honestly though 3 min on one side and 3 min on the other and good to go. I like it still very rare."

11) What’s something most people don’t know about you?

I can’t say that there is anything, I am an open book if there is something that you don’t know and want to know, ask and I am more than happy to tell you."

North Country Snapshot #9 Jennifer Donovan

Name: Jennifer Donovan
Occupation owner of the Purple Peacock, Littleton
Residence: Bethlehem, NH
Age: 41 (although my mother always said a Lady should never reveal her age)

1) Given the choice of anyone in the world, living or dead, real or fictional, with whom would you want to have dinner?

“This is a tough one to narrow down to one, but I would have to say that I would choose my Mother. She died twelve years ago of breast cancer, at a time I was really struggling in life. She never got to meet my son. She was part of the inspiration behind the Purple Peacock (my new local arts and crafts, vintage and antique store on Main Street Littleton, NH) and I would like her to see what I have created, I think she would be proud.”

2) What’s one of your favorite movies?

“One of my favorite movies (series really) is definitely Harry Potter. What person doesn’t want to have the ability to alter and control the world around them. Fix my broken glasses in a poof (or better yet my car), change the color of your hair in a snap (why not match your shoes), wash the dishes with the wave of a wand (yes please).”

3) Cat or dog?

“Cat or dog, I cannot decide so, one of each! My current dog, Camo, is a shelter dog of mixed breed and around 3 years old. My cat is in the vicinity of 20 years old and has been with me through 9 moves (three states), 6 dogs and 2 husbands.”

4) If you could vacation anywhere in the world, where would you go?

“Vacationing any place tropical and beachy sounds good to me. If I ever get to go on vacation again (I did just open my own store so it’s not looking good anytime soon) I would like to only have to pack a toothbrush and sarong.”

5) What’s the last thing you remember hearing on the radio?

“NPR news this morning on the radio coming to work.”

6) What’s your favorite thing about the North Country?

“What I love most about the North Country is the mountains and trees. Not just the views but the shear majesty of it all.”

7) Smartphone, flip phone, or rotary phone?

“I own a smart phone but since I cannot fathom most of the features, it is probably being wasted on me.”

8) What’s your least favorite thing about the North Country?

“Why, my least favorite thing about the North Country has got to be the length of winter, snow on Memorial Day is just not right.”

9) What's the biggest problem facing the world right now?

“In my opinion, the biggest problem facing the world today is technology. People have instant access and response time and have lost patience as a result. Too quickly a sharp comment can be made and responded to, the necessary thought and cooling period that can amend our words, is lost.”

10) How do you like your steak cooked?

“I prefer my steak rare.”

11) What’s something most people don’t know about you?

“There is not much that at least someone doesn’t know about me, I’m not one for secrets. I always provide what many would consider TMI, but communication between humans is hard enough without innuendo and conjecture so why not put it all out there?”
